Chaotianmen Square sits at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, and has been Chongqing's water gateway and urban origin since ancient times. Standing at the front railing, visitors can see the jade-green Jialing River on the left and the muddy-yellow Yangtze on the right, forming a striking two-color waterline where the rivers meet. Chaotianmen was first built in the early Ming Dynasty and was the largest of the seventeen ancient city gates. Today, after multiple renovations, the square has become a core landmark for leisure and sightseeing. Below lies Chaotianmen Pier, where nightly river cruise boats depart. The Raffles City complex rises behind the square like a cluster of sails, creating a dialogue between old and new. At night, dazzling lights from both banks reflect on the water, making it one of the best spots to photograph Chongqing's nightscape.
